Camber Sands Pool House
Pool House - Kitchen, Office & Bespoke Joinery
A considered package of bespoke oak joinery designed to run throughout this contemporary coastal home. The aim was to create a consistent feel from room to room, using natural oak, simple detailing and a textured finish to bring warmth to the clean architecture of the house.
Original Brief / Concept
The brief was to create a range of fitted joinery that felt contemporary but still suited the relaxed setting of a beach house. Storage was a big part of the project, but it needed to feel integrated into the architecture rather than dominate the spaces.
Oak became the common thread throughout, giving the different pieces a sense of connection while allowing each one to serve its own purpose.
What I Did
The project included a bespoke kitchen storage unit, cabinetry, shelving, cupboards, doors and a custom ladder and steps.
Rather than treating these as separate pieces, I approached the joinery as one complete package. The same oak, proportions and detailing were carried throughout the house, with clean lines, flush finishes and minimal copper finger pulls keeping everything consistent.
Challenges & Interesting Details
One of the key details was the finish of the oak. I added a subtle chattered texture to the surface, bringing out the grain and giving the timber a much more tactile quality. It adds warmth and character without taking away from the simplicity of the design.
The bespoke ladder and solid oak steps also needed to feel like part of the house rather than something added afterwards. Getting the proportions, junctions and smaller details right was important throughout, particularly where different pieces of joinery met.
The result is deliberately understated – clean and contemporary, but with enough texture and natural variation to feel at home in a relaxed coastal setting.
