What Influences My Work

I’ve always loved design – whether it’s architecture, furniture, art or anything in between. I’m constantly noticing details, materials and ways things have been put together, and inevitably some of that finds its way into my own work.

Mid-century design has always been a big influence, particularly when it comes to my freestanding furniture. I love the proportions, simplicity and functionality of pieces from that era. There’s very little there for the sake of it, and that’s something I try to carry through into what I make.

I’m equally drawn to Japanese and Scandinavian interiors. There’s an effortlessness to both that I really like – a focus on natural materials, craftsmanship and simple forms. Of course, making something look effortless usually takes a fair amount of effort. Getting the proportions, joints and details right is often what allows the finished piece to feel so simple.

Then there’s traditional English cabinetry, which might seem like a slightly different world, but I think there’s plenty that connects them. When it’s done properly, it can be incredibly elegant. Subtle mouldings, considered proportions, traditional construction and hand-painted finishes can give a piece character without it becoming overly decorative.

I don’t think my work sits entirely within any one of these styles, and I wouldn’t really want it to. I’d rather take the bits I admire from each – the simplicity of mid-century furniture, the material-led approach of Japanese and Scandinavian design, and the detail and craftsmanship of traditional English cabinetry.

Ultimately, whatever I’m making, I want it to feel considered, well made and like it belongs where it’s going.
